MAYBE I AM FOLDING MY TENT

It’s almost 6PM on Thursday. I called the agency this morning as I was supposed to be moving to my new city tomorrow. The school had accommodation for me to live in for free until the visa was done, and they were going to get me a decent apartment.

I called the agency and my agent said, “I was just about to phone you”. They always say that. The school told her that they would not get me a better apartment (as they had promised) because it was too expensive. The agent said take the small apartment and I said no. There is no point moving into a place where you wouldn’t be happy.

So I have to move out of here (Saeyoon’s) tomorrow and funds are limited. What to do? The agent said she would try to find me another school that would have a place for me to live now. I didn’t hold out much hope and I said sure, go ahead and try. I then thought that enough already, if there is no job today I’ll go back to Canada. Maybe getting another job here wasn’t meant to be. I phoned my mother and said, “Be honest, are you sure you can put up with me living on your couch for a while”? She said, and I wanted to cry, “I would do anything to have you move back to this part of the world”.

I told her I would know later if I would come back to Toronto tomorrow. Because of the time difference I couldn’t let her know in the middle of the night. It is reassuring to have someone who will always take you in. I am so lucky to have and had such good parents. I know not everyone is as fortunate as me. I know just how good my mom and dad are and have been, and that while many say they would do anything for you, my parents never had to say that because they just did that.

I then realized I can’t leave tomorrow because I don’t have enough medicine and it would cost me a fortune in Canada. If this job doesn’t happen (and I don’t think it will as it approaches 6PM) then I’ll visit a doctor tomorrow, get 3 months of medicine, and fly out on Saturday. My agent says the teacher at the school is still in class and will visit the principal when she’s done. Somehow I don’t believe her. Middle school (which is what this new school would be) finishes at 5PM. It’s too bad in a way because the town is supposed to be beautiful and the air is good.

I cannot move to a motel and wait and find a job. I can’t afford it. And I am picky. I want daytime hours, I don’t want elementary kids or kindergarten, I want a nice apartment. There is no point in me taking less than what I want because it will not work out. I’m being picky, but realistic about myself here.

I asked Saeyoon’s dad if I could give him my car if I go and he could sell it for me, and of course he said yes. The man has adopted me. He visits this apartment (her parent’s are separated) about twice a year. With me here, he’s here almost every day. I will never understand it.

The other day he came over and then said that he wanted to go out and buy me some green grapes. And he left. An hour later he comes back with strawberries because green grapes are out of season. He then starts phoning around asking if anyone knows where he can get green grapes. We went out and he found some so he bought them. He made someone from the store go wash them so I could have some right away. I didn’t even ask for the green grapes. Why? Why? Why?

I think if I leave he’ll miss me more than anyone. Saeyoon was about to leave for work when I announced I might go to Canada tomorrow. I think she was quite surprised but then again, so was I. I keep telling her she should say how she feels regardless of what I say or say I’ll do but she doesn’t. I think you should express your feelings so that you don’t leave anything unsaid and later regret the things you didn’t say.

We are trying to understand each other. We’ve talked a lot this week and it’s been good. There is no secret about how I feel about her, and how I feel that I’ve been treated. Yesterday I moved out to go live in a motel for a couple of days. I was following her dad as he would find a place for me. While we were driving I asked him to pull over because I wanted to talk to him. He did and came in my car. I said, “Am I being stupid”? I mean, couldn’t I survive for 2 more days here and save money? If I left this apartment I was really saying goodbye and was I comfortable with that? He said I should go back to the apartment because a motel was too expensive. I came back.

I was stupid to leave like I did. I have now expressed everything I didn’t like to her and have said it’s all in the past. She knows (or says she does) that she knows that she is sometimes thoughtless and inconsiderate. I said if she changes, great, and if she doesn’t, so be it. I said when I move far away if we see each other, great, and if we don’t, so be it. I have to stop being angry and hurt. It’s not healthy for me. So I am going to stay calm and let what happens, happen. If I stay in Korea time will tell. If I go back to Toronto she says she wants to come in November. We will see. I can’t worry about it. Obviously she has a hold on me or I would have walked away. I feel now that I can accept whatever happens. If it works out I’ll be very happy. If it doesn’t I will be disappointed but not crushed. It’s funny but I think if we lived together things would be much better between us. For some reason I really think it would work. It just has it’s rough moments as boyfriend/girlfriend. Strange.

If I’m going to Canada I have some serious packing to do. I will leave a lot behind that Saeyoon or her mother can have and give the rest to charity. I will have to send a box of clothes back. I haven’t packed for Canada because I wait. I’m going out in about 90 minutes to see Saeyoon and I should probably do something before then if I’m leaving. In a way I feel paralyzed and that this really isn’t happening.

Things have changed so much in the last couple of months. Do things happen for a reason? Not always. Sometimes as much as you don’t want to be, you’re just a pinball bouncing around in life. At the moment it’s how I feel.

If I leave Saturday it will mean I won’t see Jeju Island. Damn!

SLIPPERVILLE

Saeyoon’s mother (who I am sure has a name but I don’t know it) has slippers she wears in the bedroom, living room, and kitchen. When she goes on the balcony she takes off those slippers and puts on other slippers that wait on the balcony. When she goes to the washroom, there are slippers for that room. And the laundry room comes with it’s own pair of slippers. That’s four pairs of slippers strategically placed around the house. I thought it was weird but I asked my Korean assistant teacher today and she said it wasn’t strange. I thought that was strange.

I finished my job in Ilsan today. The good news is no more 90 minute classes. The bad news is no income. I could have toughed it out for another week. The agency told me the job was a go and the school was willing to have me come to town and look at potential apartments so I get something I like. That’s nice and good.

On Monday I’ll go to immigration and get (I hope) my visa extended for 30 days. It’s not good to be applying for a new visa and being in the country illegally. After that I’ll visit my English speaking doctor for a regular visit and then I’m off to the employment agency to give them my papers and sign another contract.

When a company applies for a visa for you, it takes about a week to get a visa issuance number. Once you have this number you leave the country (Japan usually because it’s close) and visit the Korean embassy and give them the number and your passport. You come back the next day and get your visa. So it will be approx. a couple of weeks until I start the job. Hopefully I can move before then. I guess I’ll ask them when I go and look at apartments.

I don’t know what to do. I can’t afford a motel while I’m not working but I really can’t take much more of living here. Her mom is really nice to me but being the perpetual guest isn’t fun. The relationship isn’t really one any more. When she got home last night she went and played on the computer. Today I asked her why as she said we were going to talk. She said she forgot. Yes, she probably did but communication wasn’t that important to her to be on her mind.

This morning I got an email from her apologizing for yesterday (temper tantrum). It told me she couldn’t express just how bad she felt. I felt that I’m in your apartment and you couldn’t come and say these things in person? You had to send an email? I called her this morning and told her that. I basically said that you can’t have any relationship without communication. She told me I was right. She said she wanted to communicate with me. She said we should on Saturday afternoon. I said that she’s busy with her class and she said I should come and meet her after class. I said, “we’ll see”. I’m curious if she’ll mention it tomorrow (Saturday) morning. She also said, again, that we’d communicate tonight when she got home. She was getting home late because she was staying at her office to do her homework. I know she went on her computer and I just looked and she’s in bed sleeping. I guess communication doesn’t involve saying goodnight.

I’m not even complaining anymore. She is who she is, and things are what they are. I honestly feel she “broke” the relationship and it was up to her to fix it. That isn’t going to happen and I am actually okay with that. It’s just very difficult to be in the same apartment. I think of what could have been and isn’t. I think I want to get on with my life and I will once I have my own place. I’m tired of being angry and disappointed and critical. She lives in her own world and it’s not a world I am too fond of. I’m not saying I’m always right and my way is the best way, but the way she acts in a relationship is not the way I would act. That doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, it only means that the things I believe in and are important to me, aren’t the same things that she believes in and are important to her.

I may waste money on a motel for mental health reasons. I told her today that I was out of here on Wednesday or Thursday. She said I shouldn’t go as it would be insulting to her mother. I said I was sorry. Actually, what I should have said was she should tell her mother that her boyfriend is now her ex-boyfriend and that’s why he’s leaving. I will figure out what to do after Monday when I see when I can visit my new city and look at apartments.

What I would really like is to visit family. Unfortunately I don’t have the money for plane fare. If I did it would solve a lot of problems. I could see people I miss and even though I’d still be living in someone’s house, it would be easier than living here. Summer vacation is in July and August and I’d like to go to Canada for a week or 10 days, but should I spend the money I need to save?

My dad’s birthday is coming up (June 4th) so I’ve been thinking about him and missing him quite a bit lately. I know he’s dead but it’s just so hard to believe. If he was still alive he’d only be turning 77. He got sick and died so young. It’s so fucking unfair. I’d give anything to see him and listen to the damn TV being on too loud. Life sucks sometimes. So does death.

ANOTHER DAY IN LOONEY LAND

Sometimes you see things again and again, but your mind just can’t believe them. You see them happen and you think, “no, this really isn’t happening”. Guess what buddy? They are. But first an update.

I’ve been working at the city job (Ilsan) Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Today is Thursday and a national holiday (although all stores are open). It’s Buddha’s birthday so happy birthday to the big guy. This country is more than 50% Christian so I don’t know why they celebrate Buddha’s birthday, but a holiday is a holiday.

The job is really bad. I am checking the time every few minutes. Ninety minutes a class is absurd. I have 1 adult class of an intermediate level and that’s fine. The rest of them are terrible and I find I have little patience. My Korean assistant says I don’t show it (which is good) and I’m doing fine. I wish I could tolerate it because I’d move to Ilsan, but I can’t.

Today being a holiday I didn’t work. It’s a double-edged sword. No work, no pay. Not good. No kids. Good. Tomorrow is the last day I’m committed to but I may see if they want to extend because I won’t be starting my new job right away.

On Tuesday night my ophthalmologist friend, Dr. Kang, took me for dinner again. The conversation flowed pretty easily and comfortably so that was good for both of us. He told me he pays about $100,000 in taxes. The man is more loaded than I thought. I should have been an eye doctor (or a dentist).

On Wednesday (yesterday), I called the agency to see if they had sent my documentation away to get my visa. My current visa expires next Tuesday. They told me the school wanted to change the start date from June 1 to July 1. I flipped out. First of all, no one called me which is thoughtless and rude. Second of all summer vacation starts in July so why would a school want to have a teacher start then? I was so angry. I could have been looking for work in the meantime and found something. Now I have no job or visa come Tuesday. I told this agency I would come in Friday morning to get my documentation.

Today was Thursday (Buddha’s birthday) but I sent out a couple of resumes. To my surprise at lunchtime I got a call from a recruiter who says she has authority to hire for the high school she wants me to go to. I believe her because I know the province does not hire their own English teachers but farms it out to agencies. We talked for a while and she said there is a job in Gwangju (about an hour from Seoul) and the air was clean there. Of course, she could be lying. However, she sounded all business and no-nonsense. She asked why they should hire me because I haven’t stuck out a contract yet. I said that if the right job was there and working, then I could stick out a contract. Maybe. But I didn’t say maybe. So tomorrow she will confirm everything with the school and on Monday I will take her my documentation. Then I’m about 10 days from starting because I can’t start without a visa. That really sucks because I need to get out of here. I may splurge on a love motel starting next Wednesday (if I’m working in Ilsan) because I can’t take much more here.

I got a job offer at an academy in the South last night. It was a phone interview through another agency and it didn’t appeal to me so I turned it down. This other agency found me another job today but it’s about 2 hours from Seoul (smaller city) and the hours are 1 to 8. I don’t want to work until 8. However, I said I’d think about it.

Tonight at dinner I took some BBQ Chicken out of the fridge to eat. Saeyoon’s mother came running from her bedroom to tell me she would heat it up. I don’t argue so I said yes. She then served me this dish of pumpkin and beans (I think). I couldn’t help but make a face when I tried it and Saeyoon’s mom laughed. I suffered through it all. I wouldn’t even do that for my own mother.

So what’s happened that I couldn’t actually believe was happening? Today I had a shoe thrown at me hard, and in anger. In all my years no one has every thrown anything at me. I didn’t yell. I didn’t get angry. I almost laughed.

Saeyoon and I had an argument (or rather I got angry about something she did) on Monday evening. I drove her home and disappeared for 3 hours. I didn’t want to be in the same apartment as her. I got a text message on my phone saying, “where r u? please come home”, but I just ignored it. When I did get in she was sleeping so she couldn’t have been too worried.

On Tuesday I was still angry (which is unusual for me) and I went out with Dr. Kahn and then just stayed outside until after midnight thinking. The weather was nice and I didn’t want to be in the apartment with her. She called 3 times but I didn’t answer my phone. When I came in she was sitting up and asked me where I had been. I told her out with Dr. Kahn. There was some small talk and then she asked me why I didn’t answer my phone when she called. I replied, “because I had nothing to say”. That sent her walking off and that was it for the night.

She had sort of apologized and tried to explain herself in the morning but I admit I wasn’t easy to talk to. I do believe in cases like this, you just have to keep trying to get through to the other person. That is not her way though.

Last night when I got in last (I had dinner with So Yung and Minsu), I went to talk to her. I was calm finally. I asked her if there was anything she wanted to talk about with me and she said yes, but not right now. It’s not her way to discuss problems right away. I believe if there is something to talk about then the sooner the better. In her world there is no rush and I think it’s almost like if you pretend there is no problem, then there is no problem.

Today I stopped by her office. She had to give a couple of lessons and do some music homework. I came in and told her I was in the area (true) and wanted to know if she wanted to talk to me, or just have a ride home because of the weather, or I should just leave because she was busy. She said she was busy but I should sit down. What she wanted to talk to me about was what my jobs plans were. I told her my updated news and asked if there was something else to talk about because the time was very short before I was leaving. She said not now but another time. I reiterated that time was short and she flipped out. She went out in her office and started picking things up and throwing them against the wall. She was screaming at me. She was angry I told her time was short. She put dents in the wall and it was really quite amazing. I’ve never seen anyone behave like that in real life. When I’ve seen it in the movies, it wasn’t that bad. I’m very calm and tell her that if she wants to throw something she should throw it at me. A few minutes later she picked up one of her shoes and threw it very hard at me. It was unreal. A couple of people stopped by her office to see what the racket was about, but they could just watch in surprise. I got tired of trying to be reasonable so I just said, “Goodbye Saeyoon” and left.

She phoned me about 30 minutes later and apologized (again) and she asked me why I said, “Goodbye Saeyoon”. I told her it was because I thought it was an appropriate thing to say. She went on about some other things including that she didn’t think I cared about her. I must disagree. When we argue I always give in and do it her way. I am very kind to her. Sometimes I’m stubborn but I’m not perfect. Considering all the things I’ve forgiven her and never mention I think she has quite the nerve to complain about my being upset the last couple of days.

She said we will talk later (whatever) but it’s now after 9PM. I do wonder if she’s doing homework or drinking in her office. I’ll find out when she gets in. But I do know that if she really believes I don’t care then we don’t have anything to talk about. I don’t care if it offends her and she stalks off (again). I have never doubted that she cared; I just think she doesn’t show it properly. To say I don’t care is a terrible insult to me and the way I treat her.

So, I must get out. Obviously if I had money to burn, I’d be elsewhere burning. I am trying to suck it in as long as I can to save some money. The last couple of days I’ve thought of Canada and if I should just go back and me a millstone. My cough gets worse, my health isn’t 100%, and the special person I was staying in Korea for has turned out to be a figment of my imagination.

Is this a negative post? I don’t think so. Things are not good but they will get better. Slowly I’m looking at things realistically. I’m sad that things aren’t working out like I hoped, but I’m being realistic and that’s what I wanted to be.

MAYBE I AM DOING THE RIGHT THING

I went to the agency and signed on for the Yangpyeong job on Friday. That’s the country job. It wasn’t an easy decision and one I have serious reservations about. Being isolated doesn’t bother me at the moment considering I’ve been living with others for 6 weeks, but how will I feel in a month or two? Sometimes you take your chances and I know the Ilsan job is as good as it gets for non-public school jobs without evening hours. I just know I wouldn’t last so I won’t take that.

On Friday morning Saeyoon gave me a note telling me not to take the Yangpyeong job. It’s too far. She told me her mother didn’t agree. Her mother said it’s only an hour away and if you don’t want to teach elementary kids, you shouldn’t. That makes some sense. Her mother served me vegetables and potatoes for breakfast and said potatoes grow in Yangpyeong so I should save some money, buy a farm, and grow potatoes. Hmmn, I don’t think so.

I went to work at the Ilsan job Friday and the time just dragged and dragged. That let me know I was right to not take it. I lose patience if I don’t like doing what I’m doing, and that’s not good for a teacher to do.

On Saturday I was going to move out to an apartment that the employment agency has available. I was going to live there until the end of the month. I want some privacy. However I’m picky so I decided to pack my things for a couple of weeks, and if the apartment was fine when I looked at it, I’d stay. If not, I’d come back here to Saeyoon’s. I told Saeyoon Saturday morning (before she went to her classes) that I wished her well and I would call later in the week to make sure it was convenient for her mother when I wanted to come back and organize everything. She said it sounded like I was saying goodbye and I said it was a possibility. She asked me to stay at her house because she was worried about me along with her mother and father. I was very non-committal.

Her father came over and I told him I was taking the Yangpyeong job. He said it was too far and he started to cry. You could have knocked me over with a feather. He said we wouldn’t see each other. This is all beyond my comprehension. It’s a different culture here, and here they believe in “taking care” of each other. In North America we are more independent.

I went to Bucheon with Myung Soo (Saeyoon’s dad) to see the apartment. It was really just a small bedroom with a shower. There is a bathroom for everyone on the floor for the use of a toilet and a sink. There is a washing machine for everyone to share, along with a kitchen. The place was clean but I want a toilet and sink in my room. I said I would think about it and let them know later in the day.

Myung Soo thought I should keep staying with Saeyoon and her mother. I tried to explain how difficult it was for me to be the long-staying guest. I don’t know whether he doesn’t listen or the concept is too foreign. He insisted that Saeyoon’s mother wanted me to say.

Saeyoon came back from her classes and asked me not to move. She said it was too far, she wouldn’t be able to see me easily, and if I needed her she just couldn’t appear in a little while. I told her that she’s too busy for me and that I didn’t really expect her to come and see me once I moved. She shed some tears but didn’t argue with me. I don’t know if she doesn’t contradict me because she thinks I’m right, or it’s just not her way.

It’s so sad. If she would have said to me to not go and pledged to make time for me then I probably wouldn’t be going. She said don’t go, but she didn’t commit to making time for me. She is too busy now, and when she’s not busy she’s exhausted. She has no balance in her life to help her not be exhausted. I believe she doesn’t think about what are the most important things. She’s told me many times that she can’t imagine life without me and I’ve told her she needs to do the things to ensure that doesn’t happen. I told her that I could see her living here with her mother 20 years from now and that was very sad.

I told her I feel that she treats me poorly. I feel like a dog who sits around waiting to be called and then comes running. I told her that I don’t feel that I’m important to her. I know that I am, she just doesn’t know how to behave in a way that lets me feel important. I told her that’s she too thoughtless for me. I also told her I was tired of criticizing her and she was free to do want she wanted. It’s true. You should do what you want. She can say what she wants (you’re important, etc.) but it’s the actions that count.

I didn’t take the apartment in Bucheon. Too small and a shared toilet and sink told me not to. So I shall try and survive my remaining 10 or so days here. Saeyoon went to do some Buddhism thing today and her dad came by. I asked him to order me a pizza (I don’t speak Korean) and he did. He then said he was going to get some lunch and he left me his credit card. I can’t argue. It’s almost like I insult him if I don’t take his money. Yesterday he filled my car with gas.

I met the brother for the first time last night. He’s 35 and stopped by briefly. Our total conversation consisted of a “hello”. I said to Saeyoon, “your brother is a friendly fellow”, and she said he was shy. I just felt he could have made a little more of an effort.

So why do I think I’m doing the right thing? Because I have cold. AGAIN. This is absolutely ridiculous and absurd. I’m coughing, my voice is hoarse, and my body aches. I’ve just stayed in today and have managed to fall down twice. I must get away from this pollution. I have always felt that when I’m not undergoing a serious illness that I’m a reasonably healthy person. Not now. I feel like a sick old man. I don’t like it. I will stick out the country job for a while, breath clean air, and put away some money. Then when I return to North America (who knows for how long), I will be able to afford to buy myself a cup of coffee while I look for work.

EVEN AFTER I MAKE UP MY MIND, I CAN’T MAKE UP MY MIND

After waffling last night on my decision, Saeyoon and I talked this morning. She actually said, and I was shocked, that taking the Ilsan (city) job would let us be closer. Her father came over and he said I should take the Ilsan job. So I decided to take the Ilsan job and went to work today.

I HATED it. My first class was adults and I enjoyed that, but then I had 3 90 minute elementary kids’ classes. The kids are nice, well-mannered and I can’t complain about them. I can only complain about the utter boredom and lack of mental stimulation in “teaching” them.

I was checking the time about every 5 minutes and the it just dragged and dragged. I told the person who is in charge of the school that I didn’t think I could do this. We talked and he took me to dinner at Outback (very nice of him) and I really wish I didn’t hate it so much. I really think I won’t be happy teaching elementary kids. Ideally I should teach adults, but I don’t want to work evenings.

I called about the country job and told them I would take it. Maybe I’ll change my mind in the morning but I’m supposed to go to the agency in the morning and give them my papers and sign the contract. I think one of the things that might make me want this is the feeling that I need to get away. After more than a month of living with others, I just want some alone time.

I told the Ilsan job that I would work through next week as they are in a bind and need to find a teacher. The country job doesn’t start until June 1st and I could use the money so it works out for both of us. I’m sure (maybe sure) they can find a teacher next week.

I’m exhausted from going around and around on this. Once more I’m sick of myself. I do know if I can stick it out in the country it allows me the best chance to save money. It gives me the best chance of being able to stay away from Saeyoon. And my breathing hasn’t been “normal” in weeks and weeks. I think the clean air will make me feel a little better.

I was just about to write some more complaints about Saeyoon, but I’ll skip it. This past month has upset my life quite a bit. I’ve learned things about her that I didn’t want to learn. Okay, no more complaining.

So in the morning I will make another “final” decision. I wonder if when I read this blog in the future, I’ll wonder what I was thinking. I think so.

I’M SO MAD I COULD SPIT

Where did that phrase come from? I can spit without being mad. Lots and lots of Koreans spit in public all the time. It’s more popular than drinking. Maybe. I’m so mad I could, I don’t know. What can I do? Nothing is the reality answer.

I have to decide what job to take. I have an offer of a job in Ilsan (nice city) that is on the Seoul subway line about 45 minutes from the center of Seoul. The hours are 1 to 7PM, the pay is decent, the housing is acceptable, I have friends in Ilsan and cities that are close. The job is teaching elementary kids to adults, beginners to advanced. The majority are beginners, most of the ages are 12 and under.

The other job is about an hour by car from Seoul. It’s supposed to be a beautiful area in Korea with clean air. People vacation there so it’s nice. The job is working half-time at a middle school and half-time at a high school. So it’s a public school position.

There are positives and negatives to each job. I worry that if I work out in the country, I’ll be lonely after a couple of months. The pool of people to make friends with is smaller than in the city. But it would be a bit of an adventure.

The city job allows me more opportunity to socialize. The people in the country are very friendly I’m told. It’s a real dilemma. Things just turn over and over in my head.

I started discussing it with Saeyoon last night. I said if I moved far out, if we were interested we would make time for each other. I am trying to have faith in her, but I don’t. I phoned her today and we discussed it some more. The city job offered to show me the apartment they would rent for me, so she suggested I not decide until I see the apartment and where I would work. I was to call her back later.

After that, the city job called and said they had an emergency and asked me if I could teach for 3 hours today. They said they would pay me cash on the spot and then we would go look at apartments. Not having worked in over a month I need the money so I accepted. I worked with beginner classes and I smiled but hated it. How often can you teach, “Hello, my name is blah. Nice to meet you”. I’m sick of it.

We looked at an apartment afterwards and it wasn’t great, but it was acceptable. I couldn’t have it until next Wednesday so I would be stuck here until then. I told the person in charge that I was weighing both jobs and would let them know in the morning. He told me that he really hoped I would work for them. I don’t think it’s me but they need a warm body.

If I take the country job it doesn’t start until June 1st. But the agency placing me told me they have an apartment in Bucheon (where I used to live) that I could stay at until then. So I could move out real soon.

I came back to Saeyoon’s eager to go over things and have her help me work it out. She has a Korean flute lesson on Wednesday night’s from 8 to 8:30. I got back at 10 and I saw her waiting at the elevator. I asked her why she was so late and she told me that she stayed and practiced after class. She smelled kind of funny and I thought it’s my imagination.

We get up to the apartment and I keep smelling this smell I recognize but can’t really believe I’m smelling it. It’s alcohol. She is a bit drunk. I am so angry. She knew I wanted to discuss my problem and you can’t have a serious discussion with a drunk person. She said she drank on the street and subway when I asked her if she went to a bar. Do people who buy alcohol for themselves and drink it while walking down the street have a problem? Quite possibly.

I am so mad. Do I have the right to be angry? I’m not sure. It’s her life. But I ask myself what kind of friend wouldn’t hurry back to discuss a very serious problem you have? Someone who is not much of a friend I think.

I’m tired of being critical of her. I’m tired of being disappointed. Right now I think I want the country job to get as far away from her as possible because I have a problem sticking to my decisions. I am so disgusted. I just walked away from her. I don’t think I can say anything decent to her. I feel like yelling and that’s not me. Of course I can’t because it might disturb her mother.

I’m not her father (who might have a drinking problem). I’m not her boss. I’m not in charge of her. I’m just the guy who thought perhaps there was a chance we had a future and were a good match. I’m mad at myself. I need to get real. I’m in my room right now typing and she’s behind me banging on the window to get my attention. I’m just so hurt.

I need to make a rational job decision. They are good things about both of them. There are downsides. I worry about the potential for too much solitude. But there is a real appeal to moving where it’s pretty and the air is good. I need to decide in the morning and I only have myself to discuss it with.

Yesterday Myung Soo (Saeyoon’s father) came to get me to go out and find BBQ chicken. He worries I’m not eating. I just follow him around. It really is very kind. But it’s too much. Dr. Kang (eye doctor friend) took me for dinner last night to a very nice restaurant. He must be loaded. Dinner for two was $190 (American). He told me he’d like to see me every week on Tuesday. He wants to practice his English but we like each other and I think we’re friends. He asked me to tutor him in the past but I said no. We can be friends but I won’t take money. But I know if I see him regularly he’ll pay. He thinks I should take the city job but he wants to visit with me weekly so he’s a little biased. We made plans, again, to go to Jeju Island for June 23rd. I promised him I wouldn’t be sick this time.

This morning I had blood tests and a doctor’s follow up appointments scheduled. When I went to give blood they wouldn’t serve me. It seems the business office lied to me on Monday when they took my money. They left a balance on my account so I couldn’t get care until it was paid. I was so angry. Eun Jeong found me and told me that we needed to go to the business office to discuss it. I was angry and told them they were all liars. I yanked one guy’s keyboard and almost knocked his monitor over. Eun Jeong was scared. Then one of them picked up the phone and told Eun Jeong he was calling the police. (He lied. There were no police).

I went to Information at the hospital to find out who was the boss of the business office so I could talk to them. They directed me to their complaint department. I went there to tell them my story. The woman seemed sympathetic and brokered a compromise after much discussion with the business office. I could get care today, but I could never come back to the hospital. That was fine with me as I was moving and really had no desire to travel back there.

My kidney level is a little elevated. There is a dilemma. I shouldn’t drink too much water because of the edema in my leg (the problem that is the result of my angiogram and anemia), and I need to drink more water for my kidney. The doctor only said it’s a dilemma and I should drink water if I’m thirsty, but not other times and not too much. Things are okay. I got new medication and I got my hospital records so I’m set for my next doctor. If I go to Ilsan, I can see the doctor I usually see who worked in the U.S. for 20 years. If I go to the country, I’ll have to find a new doctor.

She just came in and wanted to talk to me about my job. I said I didn’t think she was in any condition to have a serious and thoughtful discussion. She got angry and stalked away. I was right to say that. She’s having trouble pronouncing her words. I wish she could see herself. How can people be so blind as to what they do? I know that sometimes we are (I’m guilty), but she’s clueless about herself. Will she wake up at 60 to find herself still living with her mother? I think it’s a definite possibility. Is it my problem? No. Why do I feel I have to make it my problem? Why do I feel I have to try and “save” some people? I’m an idiot, but an idiot who is aware they are an idiot and is trying to fight it.

So now I will sit down and try to work out where to work. I know that whichever I decide on, I’ll always wonder about the other. I just can’t take any more “nice to meet you” classes. I know the public school position is 40 student classes of kids who know little, but there is some variety and I enjoy trying to speak to them.

I need to stop complaining about her and just break away, or just keep hanging around and being satisfied with scraps. I am making myself unhappy like this and that’s no good. Another thing in favor of the country job is I would spend less money. No Starbucks or Outback to tempt me.

HOW TO GET WHAT YOU WANT IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY

Don’t speak the language. I know that sounds weird but I have had some experience in foreign countries where I have avoided arguments and just get what I needed/wanted by only speaking English. People aren’t interested in trying to understand you if you don’t speak their language so it’s easier for them to just say, “ok”. There are security guards in Saeyoon’s apartment complex when you are driving in. If you’re Korean and don’t live here you have to explain things to them. If you only speak English then they usually look like they can’t be bothered to try and understand and just open the gate for you.

Today I got a call in the morning from the hospital. They were only speaking Korean so I told them I couldn’t speak Korean, just English. (I can say I don’t understand Korean in Korean). They put someone on the phone who spoke a little English. They wanted me to pay and I told them they could have $250 of the $400. She told me that was okay but I can’t be sure I understood. I told them I would come to the hospital in the morning to pay.

When I got to the hospital I was walking to the business office. I am so well known. A man cries out, “MartinKing” and leads me to the business office. I told them I was there to pay my balance in full at $250. The man is talking to me in Korean and I told him I didn’t understand. They got some people who spoke a little English telling me the bill was $400. I told them I understood but they would only get $250 from me.

They did ask me how I would pay on Wednesday for my follow-up appointment and I told them I held some money back for that and for medicine. They seemed to find some of my answers quite funny. Then they said to give them the $250 and then we will talk about the rest. I told him no, we can talk about it now.

They then said $250 would be okay and I said show me the receipt first. I trust no one here. They show me the receipt which shows an outstanding balance of $150. I tell them that it’s no good and they tell me it has to be like that because they have to do something afterwards to fix it. They were lying. I told them it wasn’t good enough.

At one point they said the boss had to make the decisions, they couldn’t. I said to get the boss but that never happened.

This was like a game. I modulated my voice depending on the discussion. I sometimes raised my voice which made them think, “crazy American”, I’m sure. That was the effect I was going for.

They then got the guy who I talked to on Saturday to talk to me. He told me I had to pay and if I didn’t the person who brought me to the hospital would have to pay. He is the one that signed me in. I told them I didn’t know the person who brought me and he was not a friend. He was just someone who saw someone in trouble and helped that out.

He took me outside to talk and we went over the same things. I told him he basically had 2 choices. He could take my $250 and call it done, or he could take nothing. He thought this was kind of funny and threatened me with calling the police. I told him to please go ahead. It would be wonderful if they called the police about someone who was sick.

We went back inside and he called my friend Dr. Khang who helped me but he didn’t answer the phone. That was good. They then called Saeyoon’s father (who didn’t sign for me this time) and they were talking for a while about something. I got tired of waiting and said I was leaving. He then gave the phone to me to talk to Saeyoon’s father (Myung Soo). I told him that he was not to pay for me and he had nothing to do with this. He said okay. I then gave the phone back to the man in the business office. He continued to talk to Myung Soo and I said I was leaving. He said no and I said I had waited long enough. One of the people in the office came out of the office with me (the original guy who saw me in the hall) and he physically tried to stop me from going by putting his arms out to not let me pass. I raised my voice and told him to not touch me and to get away from me. He kept trying to stop me. I told him again to not touch me and he said don’t touch me. I said fine and climbed up on some chairs and walked along them and to my car.

While I was driving out of the parking garage they phoned me to ask me to come back. I said what for but the person who called only spoke Korean. I decided to go back because I thought they must be getting tired of this and should fold. I knew I wouldn’t. When I came back in the hospital one of the business people saw me while I was walking to the payphone to make a call. I told them I would come to them when I was done. He stood by me while I used the phone. I was then expecting a call back so I told him I was going outside to use my cell phone. After a minute there were 2 of them standing by me while I was waiting for my phone to ring.

One of them was the one who threatened the police. He said something to me and I told him to please call the police. I think the one who was with him thought he was stupid to have said that. He shoved him playfully and said something that had the tone of, “what a stupid thing you said”.

While I was on the phone the one who threatened me stood by me the whole time. It was quite humorous. It was quite the game. If I had the money, I probably would have paid it. But I don’t and I was annoyed that I was in the hospital running up this bill because of problems with a test they administered.

After I got off the phone we went back into the business office. The guy who seemed to be handling my case now (the Saturday guy and police threat guy) said I had 2 choices and he wrote them down to make sure he was saying what he thought he was saying. My first choice was to pay the $400 and be able to come back to the hospital and get care. My second choice was to pay $250 and not be able to come back and get care. I told him there was a third choice and that was to pay nothing and not come back. Gotcha!

After the people in the office conferred once more the one who first saw me and tried to restrain me and can’t speak English found some English words. He said in English, “you win”. They folded and gave me a receipt for $250 paid in full. I think not speaking Korean helped me immensely. I hate to say this but I was so into the game which is what it turned into. I guess I knew I could “win” because I knew my bottom line. I’d been in the hospital for almost 4 weeks earning no money. I have no apartment and job at the present time. And as I said I thought they should take some responsibility for my being in the hospital.

Saeyoon said hospitals don’t give discounts but they have both times. Everyone said they wouldn’t take $250 but I thought it’s more than nothing. I spent 2 hours at the hospital today so that was $75 an hour for my time. I guess I won’t be on their Christmas card list.

Yesterday Myung Soo (Saeyoon’s father) wanted to take me for a drive to relax me. He showed up an hour late and we went to get Saeyoon at her office. We only went to some farm where he bought some plants. We then went to his mother’s house while he went upstairs to give them to her. We then went back to Saeyoon’s office to meet his friend who was coming to tune a piano. Boy, this sure was fun.

After that we drove to a park but didn’t get out of the car. We then went to meet some friends of Myung Soo and all went out to dinner. Myung Soo and one of his friends got quite drunk. I just kept wondering why I was there. I was trying to have one of my out of body experiences so I could be elsewhere. After dinner Myung Soo and his friends went off to drink some more and Saeyoon and I drove back to her place. (We were using her car).

I guess it was better than the hospital but not by much. When we got back I sat in the living room just trying to think what I should do. Saeyoon came in and asked me what I was doing and I told her I had some important decisions to make. She said she was going to sleep. I have been trying to talk to her about things for longer than a week but she’s always too tired or too busy. I honestly wonder about her and what she expects. Sometimes relationships are work and sometimes you have to talk about what’s inside your heart. I guess she’s a little too wrapped up in herself sometimes.

Yesterday she told me she hates herself, her father, and a few other things. I offered to hate her too if that would make her feel good and she told me she would understand if I did. How pathetic. I know depression from first hand experience but she seems to have an attitude that let’s her fail because it’s easier to think you’re no good and not try, then to make an effort and risk failure by trying. It is so fucking sad to me.

Today on the phone I told her I wasn’t angry but the time for talking had past. She told me that she wanted someone who was healthy and if I ever went in the hospital again I would get upset again because she would be the same. I don’t understand. If she thinks her behavior was poor towards me when I was in the hospital (she says she does), why would she want to act the same way? It makes no sense.

I repeated to her that I probably wasn’t the one for her if she wanted a really healthy person and she asked me why I said that. She does that. She’ll say something and I’ll repeat it to her and she’ll ask me why I said that. Almost like how could I think such a thing? I know English isn’t her first language and I appreciate that it’s harder for her because we have to communicate in English, but sometimes things just don’t make any sense.

She said she would have think about what I said (which was what she said) and we would talk later. She had to go start working. So, will we talk? No. She went out with her friend tonight. Ordinarily there is nothing wrong with that, but she’s always complaining about how tired she is. She knows we have issues. And yet she cuts and runs. And I can’t be 100% sure, but I believe she will come back drunk. Going out with friends usually means consuming copious amounts of Soju.

Part of me knows it’s hopeless. You can’t change people and you shouldn’t try. I told her today that she has told me she’s selfish, immature, and thoughtless. I told her that maybe it’s time I believed her and stop believing she wasn’t. I know there are people in the world who want to fail because it’s easier. It just hurts to care about someone who is one of them.

It’s not that she doesn’t love me or care about me. I have no doubt she does. She just isn’t capable of the responsibilities that come with a relationship or the extra effort that is sometimes needed. I know that sometimes I’m a handful, but everyone is at times. She told me again today that she appreciates that I’m the only person she’s yelled at who hasn’t left her life. She has lost many friends with her temper. I told that it was because I cared and you have to take the good with the bad if you care about someone. She didn’t really understand what I meant. Talking in person is much easier than talking on the phone.

Enough of my “love life” issues. In a way it’s like being a kid but I know so much more now that it’s frustrating at times with someone who knows so little.

I had a promise of a job starting June 1st at a City Hall in a suburb of Seoul working from 11AM to 7PM. I agreed to it as 7PM is within my “quitting time” parameters. In fact, 7 is the latest. I hate working nights. I would much prefer to work daytime hours starting at 8 or 9. Getting a job working nights in Korea is the easiest thing to do, but I am picky. I know it and admit it and don’t apologize for it. If your job is going to make you unhappy, then don’t take the job.

I went to sign my contract today for this job and happened to notice the teaching schedule. It went to 8PM and not 7PM. I asked about this and Ellie (at the agency) said, “oh yes, City Hall changed the schedule”. I’m glad I noticed. I told her I couldn’t take the job. I didn’t want to finish at 8PM. I know a lot of Koreans work late, but I do have a choice and I don’t want to make the wrong choice starting out. I have made enough wrong choices as we all know.

I asked if there were any other jobs and there was only one other, working at a middle school in a city she said was 2 hours outside of Seoul (Yangpyeong). I said no and goodbye and went to the elevator to leave.

Before I got on the elevator the manager (or Director Kim as he introduced himself) came out into the hall and asked me if I would come back in. He told me they had a teacher (they run “after school” programs in public schools) who only he knew had expressed a desire to leave soon. He asked me if I would be interested in this position if it was available. I told him, “maybe”. He said he was going to Suwon (the place where the school was) to talk to him and would I like to come. I told him no as it would bring me back to Bucheon at rush hour and I wanted to avoid that. I don’t know why he wouldn’t check things out on his own and then call me.

At the present time I have to be out of the country by May 29th. The middle school in Paju never cancelled my visa which I thought they did. I thought I was here on a 6 month tourist visa working illegally. It seems I’m on an E-2 visa working illegally. So to stay I need a job right away. And I’m picky. What a combo!

Director Kim asked if he could call me around May 26th and if the job was there offer it to me. I told him that I had to be out of Korea by May 29th so the 26th was no good. He realized that and asked if he could call me in the next few days. I told him to please do.

I left there and started driving back to Gaebong (where Saeyoon lives). I called Kyle to share with him the humor of how the job hours changed as he knows first hands how I hate working nights. Kyle and I seem to talk more easily know since I ripped him off last week. We had a verbal agreement for him to buy my car. He had knocked $200 a month off the rent as partial payment for the car and was to give me an additional $500. He had “paid” $800 so far. On Friday I told him I was keeping the car. I told him he had never paid me on time, changed my salary during the run of the contract, and asked me to trust him which I stupidly did and found myself without work. I told him there should be consequences for things like he did and I didn’t feel bad about what I was doing. I told him I knew I was wrong (2 wrongs don’t make a right) but I was still doing it. He took it quite well and our conversations seem friendlier know. Maybe it helps him to only deal with assholes like himself.

I told him about the job in Yangpeong (middle school 2 hours outside Seoul) and he said that he had just gone to Yangpeong yesterday with his family. He said it’s beautiful, the people are nice, and the air is clean. He said it was about 40 minutes by car from Seoul. Since he’s not to be trusted I’d say it’s somewhere between 40 minutes and 2 hours from Seoul. I will believe him on the air and the scenery because why would his family drive there if it wasn’t nice?

After speaking with him I called the agency back and told them I’d be interested in working in Yangpyeong. Why would I move so far from the city and Saeyoon? One of the reasons is the air and living in a nice clean place. Another reason is I have too hard a time “leaving” Saeyoon. I see her and just melt or “fold like a cheap suitcase”. If I move myself far away we would either die a natural death or she would make more of an effort. So I’m waiting to hear back on this job.

When I got back to Saeyoon’s place, no one was here. Her mother had gone out and they have given me a spare set of keys. The 90 minutes before she returned was the first time I’ve been totally alone in 4 weeks (not counting her dog). It was so nice. I sent out some resumes to 3 agencies that seemed to represent some jobs I’d be interested in. All 3 have phoned me back and we have discussed things. 2 of them have high school jobs out of the city that are looking for someone to start right away. I said I’m interested so I hope to hear something positive tomorrow. One problem I might have is the “criminal check” that seems to be required now for public school positions. If they have to wait on that before I can start, it’s a no go. It is going to take too long.

A 3rd place called me back and they have an “after school” program that they run in Ilsan at their City Hall. Ilsan is a nice city (has a Starbucks) that was close to Paju so I’m a little familiar with it. It’s on the Seoul subway line. My friend Yoon Soo lives there. The job is from 1PM to 7PM so the hours are acceptable. They want to hire me (not too much of an interview process here) and we are talking about terms. I would rather work at a high school but I’ll show interest in this in case nothing else pans out.

Part of me wants to leave Korea. I want to be closer to family. But I’ve been a fool and saved no money and can’t go back with nothing. I’d have to live in my mother’s 1-bedroom apartment and worry about finding work. I love my mother but I think after 1 week it could get uncomfortable. And I don’t want to sponge coffee money from her. Sometimes I think, what the hell, just do it. Things usually work out. But the having no money is influencing my decision.

It was kind of cute/uncomfortable here for me a little while ago. At 6PM Saeyoon’s mom (I don’t know her name) said, “Martin, dinner”. She doesn’t speak much English. I was not hungry and she didn’t ask me if I wanted to eat but had just gone ahead and made dinner. Her parents are so nice to me. She made me a salad and some meat with watermelon for dessert. The meat was making me ill so I tried to explain to her that I couldn’t eat it. The dinner table conversation was non-existent because of the language barrier. I’d love to talk to her and learn more about her.

Her mother makes me sad. Her parents are separated and her mother has the saddest eyes. I don’t think she does much but go to church (a religious Catholic). She watches TV every night lying on a bedroll on the floor of her bedroom. She falls asleep with the TV on. When I see her I just feel like I wish I could make her smile. She just seems to have no life.

I told Saeyoon that her mother is pretty and has a good figure, which she is and does. I told her that she should divorce her husband and get a new man. I’m learning that Saeyoon repeats everything I say. She told her mother what I said and her mother said she can’t find a new man, she’s still married. I was worried things would be awkward afterwards but it’s all been fine. I will have to tell Saeyoon what is and isn’t for public consumption.

When we were at dinner last night with her dad, her father invited me to go away for a few days with him. He wants to take me to the shore and clean air for a few days. I shouldn’t worry about money as he’d take care of everything. What is with these people? I just don’t understand such kindness.

I don’t want to go with him. I’ve just spent almost 4 weeks seeing him for several hours a day. I need a break from him, as nice as he’s been. And he smokes like a chimney and drinks too much. The smoking would bother me, I’m not drinking until I’m 100% healed, and I have no idea if we’d be sharing a room. I told Saeyoon my dilemma and not to repeat what I said to her father. She told me when her father first mentioned it to her, she told him she thought it was a good idea. I asked her if she understood what I said and she said yes. I said I didn’t want to offend him and what could I say. She said she didn’t know so I’m on my own for this one. At dinner last night I told him that I couldn’t walk much (doctor says I’m to not walk too much or drink much water until healed). He said we’d be driving and not to worry about walking. I think we left it to I should ask my doctor on Wednesday if it’s alright if I go. It’s an out, but I hate lying. It’s just so weird to be with him so much. I really don’t know what her parents think about me. Maybe they just feel bad for me because I’m alone. And what will they think if Saeyoon and I break up? Ah hell, I hate this.

I’m on page 7 in my Word program. I guess I have a lot stored up after not writing for a while. I know I left some things out of my hospital sojourn post. I will see Eun Jeong who was the young woman in the room next to me in the hospital. We both have doctor’s appointments on Wednesday. She has messaged me to see how I am and I’m sure if I’m here we will remain friends. She came to visit me on Friday because she was having a doctor’s appointment and blood tests. She brought food. Her mother made breakfast for us. She tells me her mother is worried about me. She is a nice woman (who stayed at the hospital with Eun Jeong) who doesn’t speak English at all. Another person I wish I could talk to. Eun Jeong’s sister came Thursday night on her own (with unsalted French fries) to visit me and stayed a couple of hours struggling with her English. This is part of the reason I am here. People are just so nice. They don’t want anything, there is no angle they are playing, they are just warm at heart. I think they feel a bit bad for me being alone here, and some enjoy practicing their English, but I believe they are nice because they have good hearts.

I just wanted to give Eun Jeong and her family a bigger mention than yesterday because they are worth remembering and I know one day in the distant future I’ll be reading this blog and wondering just what the fuck I was doing.

That’s it for now. It’s 9:05PM. Saeyoon’s mother is in her room watching TV (too loudly), Saeyoon is out, and I’m here in the living typing away. Just another family night in Korea.

SOUJOURN IN A KOREAN HOSPTIAL

I probably should have done this while I was in the hospital but when I got there I think I was too sick, and then I just didn’t care to be bothered. Now that I’m out there is a lot to remember and get down on paper. I don’t really want to forget any of this unique experience.

As you remember I had pneumonia or bronchitis or something. I wasn’t getting any better and the doctor said I had fluid on my lungs so he made an appointment at the local hospital to see the internist. That was on Monday April 9th for a Tuesday the 10th appointment.

From the doctor I went to drive to work. I couldn’t see clearly and kept nodding off. I don’t know if it was tiredness or an indication of how sick I was. What I do know is that as I was approaching the toll gate in Gimpo, I had fallen asleep or gone unconscious. At the last moment I awoke and saw the line of cars in front of me. I swerved to avoid hitting anyone and crashed my car in to the barrier. Luckily I wasn’t hurt and didn’t hit any other cars. The tow truck came and got me and drove me to the service center.

Two people from the agency where I was working part-time before my full-time job showed up to check on me and Saeyoon’s father came. I remember Saeyoon’s father saying he had a mechanic who was a friend who would charge less to fix my car. My insurance is only for destroying other cars, not mine. I said okay and the 2 people from the agency took me back to my motel. Needless to say I didn’t go to work and just crashed for the rest of day and night.

I don’t really think I was that sick. I just thought it’s some kind of evil flu that won’t release me. I went to the hospital on the 10th with my x-ray’s in hand and saw the Internist. After a few seconds he invites me to stay in the hospital. I think he’s crazy and say that I can’t. He says I should go to the out-patient area and get some fluid. I agree to that.

While there I called Saeyoon to tell her where I am and to let the nurses talk to her so she can explain things to me. I’m lying on a bed with a drip in me feeling pretty much like death. The next thing I remember is her father coming in and telling me I should stay in the hospital because your health is the most important thing and I shouldn’t worry about money. I was feeling bad enough that I agreed that maybe I should be there to get fixed.

They admitted me to a room. There are 6 beds in a room (too many) and most patients have a family member with them 24 hours a day. There were nights there were 10 people sleeping in my room. The quarters were close, but they are that way in Korea. All I really remember is not eating but feeling like I had to throw up all the time. I kept going to the washroom to throw up a little. One time I didn’t make it and just threw up walking down the hall. How embarrassing and humiliating. After that I walked everywhere carrying a wastebasket to throw up in.

The next day they told me my problem wasn’t pneumonia but acute renal failure. (kidney stops functioning). It seems the pneumonia had infected my kidney and my kidney kind of died. That was something new to me. They had to cut open my neck and insert a catheter so they cut put the tube in there for my dialysis treatments. I ended up with 3 dialysis treatments and the kidney did get better.

I went from never peeing to peeing way too much. They couldn’t release me until my urine output was normal. I had been moved to a new room which I hated. The guy in the bed next to me moaned all the time. He was bedridden and I have no doubt he was in pain, but enough already. Moaning doesn’t help. The women visitors talked too much and too loud and the TV was on too much. I spent no time in my room because there was no peace to be found.

Most time I sat in the lounge just staring out the window. Rarely did I have the desire to read. The days were forever. I did become an expert at sitting and doing nothing.

The doctors and nurses were very kind. My doctor spoke enough English to communicate with me and the nurses, while their English was quite limited, managed to communicate. I have no complaint with the nurses as they couldn’t have been nicer to me. For some reason they never called me “Martin”. They would always run up to me to take my blood pressure, or whatever, and say, “MartinKing”. It was so cute.

I met a young lady in the next room (a private room) who spoke a little English and had been there almost a month. Her mother was living at the hospital with her (the Korean way). We spent some time together and it was good to make a friend. I also made friends with her sister when she visited, especially the time she brought French fries from McDonalds.

Saeyoon’s father was there every day. I would tell him not to come but he wouldn’t listen. Her family felt that I was alone so someone should be with me. It didn’t matter that I told them it was alright, they were deaf to what I was saying.

At the beginning it was so bad that if I went to the washroom and wasn’t back in 2 minutes, her father would come in calling my name. I couldn’t walk and push my IV pole because he had to push it for me. If I got a snack, I couldn’t pay, he had to pay. He couldn’t have been any nicer but it is difficult to have anyone around so much.

I had no privacy at the hospital. The only place I was alone was in the shower. It was so depressing to not have anywhere I could go and hide. It was so depressing to not have any loved ones there to come and visit. As nice as everyone was, it’s not the same as the people you love coming to see you.

I was not without visitors. I had quite a few which was unexpected. Saeyoon called people I knew and told them I was in the hospital and some came back after the obligatory 1st visit. Everyone brings food when you come to visit in the hospital. I got drinks, cherry tomatoes, French fries, bread, cookies, milk, etc. It was really quite nice.

One time Saeyoon’s father came and brought this kid with him. The reason for the kid was that Saeyoon’s father was leaving so the kid was there to watch that I was okay. I would get up to go to the bathroom and he would start to follow. I assured him that I was okay and I could manage. I may be in the hospital but I wasn’t an invalid.

The first few days I was there Saeyoon was wonderful. I remember her being there a lot (things are a little hazy) and I remember one night she crawled in my hospital bed with me. When I first remember that I thought it was a dream and I asked her if it happened. She said it did. It is without a doubt one of the sweetest things that has ever happened to me.

She told me she thought I was going to die. I never thought that but maybe I looked a lot worse than I thought. She said she was very scared but after the “crisis” passed she didn’t visit a lot. She would come some nights and stay for an hour but she was very busy. Of course being the overly sensitive person I am, I felt that sometimes she should have given up her “busyness” for a bit and spent time with me. It didn’t matter how much time her father spent with me, it was her who I wanted to see and who could put a smile on my face. All I heard from her was how busy and tired she was. I don’t doubt that but I know that sometimes we have to make an extra effort for those we care about and I felt this was lacking. I admit it hurt me a great deal.

I was recovering and feeling pretty good. The doctor’s were talking about releasing me soon and I was happy about that. I had no home to go to since I’d been living at the “love motel” and I had no job since the job I was going t get was gone after 1 ½ weeks in the hospital. Saeyoon and her mother invited me to stay at her apartment and I kept resisting. I felt it was very generous but a terrible idea. Finally I relented because I had nowhere else to go except a motel and agreed to come.

On a Thursday night I was good enough to get a pas to go out for the evening. It was my last adult class and I wanted say goodbye. I went and told them my tale of woe and they insisted on ordering in a pizza for me to eat. They are good people. It was very nice to spend time with them. When I got back to the hospital I was experiencing a pressure on my chest and a shortness of breath. The intern said I was supposed to be going home soon but I wondered what that mattered. I had a problem then. They did an EKG and my heart rate was much too fast. So, all weekend I was on heart medication and this machine I wheeled around. Care is limited on the weekend so I couldn’t see the cardiologist. It was depressing.

I had to sit around and wait for May 3rd to have an angiogram to check my heart vessels. They told me if I needed stents to widen my arteries they would insert them then. In an angiogram they put a catheter in your femoral artery (in the leg) and then shoot a bunch a dye in you so they can see things. My arteries were good (which was good), but after the test you have to lie still with a sandbag on your leg. There is a risk of hemorrhaging if you move and keeping still for 6 hours is very difficult. After the test I had to pee but I couldn’t lie down. I was moaning and sweating and they offered to give me a catheter which is hell. But things were so bad I had to and I screamed during insertion. The guy who inserted it said all men scream. I peed a liter of fluid so I really needed to go.

I was back in my room watching the clock and I needed to pee again. There are no privacy curtains and I told the nurse I didn’t want to pee in front of everyone. She brought a screen in which was too small and was getting one of the other patients to hold up a blanket as a curtain. Now I was getting angry. I couldn’t pee and I told her I couldn’t like that. She offered me a catheter I and said where are you going to do it? In the middle of the room? She said she would find some place private and off she went. I then managed to squeeze out a bit of urine and it hurt like hell. The nurse came back and I told her I thought I could pee myself if I was alone and where was my private place. I was quite loud and yelling that this was a “fucking stupid place” and what kind of way was this to treat patients. I think I was amusing my roommates.

She did find me a private room which was quite nice and as painful as it was I did get some urine out on my own. Saeyoon came that night and she had a book of old pop songs so we sang and it was quite fun, her sitting by the bed and me stationary in the bed. The nurses let me stay in this private room all night (a touch of heaven) and I felt pretty good in the morning except my leg was a little sore.

The doctors released me the next day (May 4th) and they told me I could go to Jeju Island with my friend the next day as planned. I was quite excited about the trip. Saeyoon’s father picked me up and bought be BBQ chicken and strawberries and watermelon to eat at Saeyoon’s as he knew I liked them. We came here and I felt just fine. I woke up early in the morning to get the airport bus and I felt fine. Everything was good until the bus got to the airport. I took the wrong suitcase and I was so dizzy I fell off the bus. I couldn’t walk but was weaving all over the place. I just thought I had low blood sugar.

I rested for ½ an hour and then went upstairs to meet my friend. He told me how bad I looked and how pale I was. I asked him to buy me an orange juice and I would be fine. I wasn’t. Inchon airport phoned me to tell me I had the wrong suitcase and they were sending someone right over to get it, and I would have to go to Inchon to get mine. Things were not going on.

Dr. Kang (my friend) said we were not going to Jeju but he was returning me to the hospital. I was in no condition to argue. He practically carried me to his car where I passed out in the back seat. The next thing I know we are at emergency back at my old hospital. They did a brain scan and a blood test and told me I had anemia which is too little blood. They thought I was bleeding inside so they did some tests looking for the source. It wasn’t the stomach and they couldn’t find the problem.

They readmitted me and I went back to my old room. It was embarrassing. They had me on fluids to stop the dizziness but because it was the weekend, patient care is limited and they couldn’t look for the problem until Monday. Not good.

On Monday they tell me they have scheduled a test for Tuesday or Wednesday. I was not happy because I was there and shouldn’t have to wait so long. When I learned Tuesday afternoon that it wouldn’t be until Wednesday I told the doctor to take my IV out, I was leaving the hospital. We had a long conversation and at the end of it they were able to do the test.

They still couldn’t find the bleeding but my leg (from the angiogram) was a funny color and had swollen to twice it’s size so that was my guess. On Wednesday morning they tell me they well schedule a sonogram for maybe today or maybe tomorrow. I told the doctor that it will be today. I am not waiting any longer. He said he would ask them to do it today and I told him, “No. You will TELL them to do it today”. I was quite aggressive and I hated to be like that with good people but I don’t believe in just sitting and waiting when you are in the hospital.

They did the sonogram and found a small hemotoma in the leg. That is like a small blood clot that impedes the bleeding process. My swelling was bad and my foot was blue from old blood settling there. But at least we knew what the bleeding was from.

The guy who did the sonogram asked me I would take an MRI. They had a brand new machine (one of 10 in the world) and it was a $7000 test but it would be no charge. I said would it help them find any problems and he said that it would right away. I said when can you do the test and he said, “maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day”. I said, “No, tomorrow” and he agreed.

So I just rested my leg and had my big MRI. I was only the 3rd patient they had used it on and where the sonogram showed many potential problems, the MRI showed that everything was pretty good. I felt good about that and all I had to do was wait for my blood levels to come up and my leg to get better.

They released me yesterday (Saturday) at noon. I went to the business office and offered them $250 for my $400 bill. I told them that was all I had which was true. They turned me down and took nothing. I don’t understand because $250 is better than nothing. Oh well.

Saeyoon’s father came to get me and he took me to get some chicken. We then went to visit friends of his. Why? I don’t know. I sat there staring at the TV for an hour while they socialized. It was weird but since he was doing me a favor I didn’t say anything.

We then looked for an ATM machine that takes foreign cards. I had transferred money to my American account because he paid my hospital bill the first time. (I didn’t want him to, but he insisted that it had to be paid right away). We finally found a machine but I have a $400 a day daily limit so I’ll have to go a few days in a row to give him all the money I owe him.

We finally came to Saeyoon’s place and it was just me, her mother, and her father. I just sat in a chair and tried to disappear. Her mother went in her room and watched TV and her father watched TV in the living room. It was just as bad as being in the hospital. Her father doesn’t live here but he was here because I was here. He asked me if I wanted to go to his mothers but I turned him down.

Saeyoon came in about 7 and we talked a bit. She is very run down and I told her she needs some balance in her life and can’t be so busy that’s she’s always tired. She is such a child in some ways. I also told her that I think many times (but not always) she is quite thoughtless. I told her that I was hurt she left me at the hospital alone so often when she is my only “loved one” here. She knows she was wrong but sometimes she just can’t do what’s right. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know if we will be able to work through this, but I do want more considerate treatment. She told me she knows that I wouldn’t have treated her like she treated me if it was she in the hospital. I laughed and said I thought that too.

So we shall see. The reality is I have nowhere else to go at the moment. I have a job starting June 1st if I want it but I don’t get the place to live until then. I haven’t saved any money which was one of my objectives when coming here. I need to smarten up this time. I know I’ve said that before but his if for real. I can’t go anywhere without some money in my pocket.

So here I sit, this morning of Sunday May 13th wondering how my day will go. I have no exciting plans and I know I will have no privacy. Her mother is nice but speaks little to no English. My Korean doesn’t exist. Saeyoon and I are not on the most solid ground at the moment. This is quite the mess I’ve gotten myself into, Ollie.

But, as always, it could be worse. At least there are people who care enough to look after me. I suppose that’s better than being totally alone. I know I should be grateful for things instead of complaining but I can’t help it.

We shall see what we shall see. I think I need to stay here and finally save money. I think that’s reality regardless of Saeyoon and I. Maybe we’ll survive this and maybe we won’t but I’ll be okay because I always am. Of course I hope for good and positive resolutions but we can’t always get what we want.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. I’ve learned first hand about Korean hospitals. I’ve learned that taking care of someone here means being with them 24 hours (which is way too much). It means crowded rooms and no privacy unless you have the big bucks for a private room (and they are not cheap). It means a lot of sitting and waiting. And oh yes, I couldn’t eat the food. I ordered in pizza a few times, had BBQ chicken once, and ate bread and strawberries and watermelon. Not the best diet in the world, but we make do with what we have..
